For Greater Longevity and Success, Align Your BICC and Hyper-Decisive® Maturities

For decades, Business Intelligence Competency Centers (BICCs)—formal groups charged with defining, delivering, documenting, and promoting best-practice BI solutions—have facilitated cross-organizational BI initiatives and the sharing of insights and information. Our data consistently indicate that organizations with BICCs report greater BI success and generally higher achievement of business benefits from the application of BI.

However, the popularity and presence of BICCs waxes and wanes over time. We are at a low point in the cycle, with new BICC activity reaching an all-time low in 2022 and significant numbers of BICCs reporting into non-traditional (other) functions. Although the reasons behind these data can be many and varied, one conclusion stands out: Without proper business alignment, BICCs can quickly fall out of synch with business needs and requirements; and when they do, their ongoing existence becomes tenuous at best.

This year and next, rising external (economic and geopolitical) forces will require most organizations to pivot and respond in new ways. Identification of these directions should and often comes from insights derived from data. Successfully overcoming these challenges requires leadership and properly aligned organization structures.

Since higher levels of Hyper-Decisive® maturity facilitate an organization’s ability to address and overcome new challenges (such as those posed by external forces), data leaders need to create the vision and strategy for achieving higher levels of Hyper-Decisive maturity across the enterprise. The BICC remains an effective organizational vehicle for bringing the right cross-functional decision makers together. They can then focus on how to ensure that BI and hyper-decisiveness efforts align with leadership strategies and business requirements to achieve desired financial outcomes. Strong alignment always needs to exist between organizations’ Hyper-Decisive maturity and the focus and maturity of their BICCs.
